Infratec – New Zealand’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system online

2024

Infratec's Rotohiko project was the country’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system when it was completed in December. Connected to WEL Networks’ network at Huntly, the 35 MWh system can power more than 2,000 homes. But its core role is to support the wholesale market optimising the region’s variable wind and solar generation, and to provide reserves support to the national grid, as a provider of both interruptible load and generator reserve.
