WELL-BEING AWARD FINALIST: Nova Energy – Fit for Life

16 May 2022

One size does not fit all when it comes to well-being. Nova Energy kept this in mind when developing Fit for Life, an inclusive, holistic well-being programme tailored specifically for its employees.

The year-long programme focuses on a different aspect of well-being each month. It covers a range of topics, including nutrition, men’s health, mental well-being, celebrating the community, and a physical step challenge.

Elements, themes, goals

The People and Culture team focused on four elements of well-being: nutrition, financial, social and physical. Each month included resources, bite-sized learning, activities and competitions that aligned with the month’s well-being theme, which supported one of the four elements.

Nova aimed to offer a variety of tools that would really benefit its people.

The initiative also had to be fun so people would want to participate, and it also needed a good name and branding. Financial constraints brought about by the global pandemic also made it important to develop the programme in-house on a small budget while still delivering maximum effect.

Specific goals were for employees to:

  • feel valued by the organisation
  • feel an improved sense of well-being

Success would be measured by:

  • seeing a good proportion of employees taking part in an activity
  • employees reporting feeling valued and that their well-being had improved as a result of the programme

Results

Nova wanted to inspire its employees to look at well-being holistically – and it believes it achieved this goal.

At the end of the first quarter, Nova surveyed its employees on how they had found the experience and what they would like to see in the remainder of the year. To ensure the programme continued to be effective, it tracked attendance at webinars, social media engagement (via Yammer), and the number of people signing up to events and challenges.

Employee feedback was overwhelmingly positive. There was high participation across events; people reported an improvement in their well-being (91 per cent of participants); and felt more valued as employees (89 per cent).

While feedback from those employees taking part was important, so was feedback from those who didn’t. Both have been incorporated into a more streamlined Fit for Life 2022 that has fewer events and four areas of focus across the four quarters: mind, body, nutrition, and social well-being.
