AWARDS FINALIST: Tina Frew – Meridian Energy

11 Aug 2023

Tina Frew is an established professional with proven capability in developing and executing strategy, and an ability to bring together diverse stakeholder groups.

Meridian Energy says she has demonstrated skill at advancing complex challenges into clear and achievable pathways.

Frew’s 10-plus years’ experience in the energy sector stretches across operational, engineering, strategy and sustainability roles. She became Meridian’s head of sustainability in 2021.

In this role she is responsible for identifying new choices within the group – Meridian, Powershop and Flux – consistent with the company’s sustainability leadership ambition. This requires ambitious frameworks and support in order to deliver programmes across a range of sustainability commitments.

Frew’s particular areas of focus include ESG, climate risk, sustainable infrastructure development, business emissions reduction, circular economy, modern slavery and human rights, biodiversity and upcoming nature-based impacts work.

Achievements

She led the creation and re-set of the company’s climate action plan – including Half by 30 – and raised sustainability in general, and that framework in particular, into executive performance measures.

She co-leads Meridian’s S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment, for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Asia Pacific, and played an influential role in a 2022 submission which saw S&P recognise Meridian as an “industry mover”.

Frew also led the process for Meridian to be an early adopter of the 2021 Global Reporting Initiative Standards for its annual report the following year, including leadership of the process for reporting new material impacts.

During her earlier career at Z Energy, Frew was a member of the World Energy Council Future Energy Leader 100 programme. Limited to 100 young professionals globally, it is designed to help inspire and shape the energy leaders of tomorrow.

Motivation

Frew’s career motivation lies in her particular focus on opportunities that help create a sustainable future and enable innovative ideas to be realised.

Meridian says she is proactive and successful in building teams and a culture that pushes the business to continuously innovate and improve the way it does things for the benefit of people and planet.

She is considered a highly effective member of the Meridian Energy team, with an adaptable and resilient nature and proven ability to change systems, learn rapidly, and generate tangible outcomes.

“Tina is, without question, one of the most influential ‘non-executive’ leaders within Meridian,” chief financial officer Mike Roan says. “Her ability to articulate complex challenges simply while presenting a clear path of action inspires confidence and support … if you hand her responsibility, she delivers.”
